Activity Log

Saturday

As we launched and informed the CG that we were proceeding on patrol, we were requested to keep an eye out for a rare visitor to the Western Solent.  Gilbert the northern bottle nosed whale had been reported in the locality of the far west and Hurst area.

We took a sweeping path in the vicinity of reports, but by the time of our arrival, we guess he had decided to go for a breath holding competition.  No sign of the little blighter.

All was quiet until 5 o'clock, whereupon we were tasked to a vessel aground off Thorness Bay.  The vessel was stuck fast and a large number of significant rocks were also in its path, therefore any attempt to remove them by force may have resulted in considerable damage to the casualties keel.  A ketch was set and they came off on the rising tide.

Sunday

All very quiet on the western front, apart from our tender recovering an unoccupied vessel listing 6 degrees to port, it was a gruelling tow.  The vessel was a 1ft Tomy (my first) boat. we returned it to a happy 3 year old skipper and a more than relieved father who would have had a lot of screams if it had not been recovered.

Crew made the most of the calm weather by clearing visual obstructions, thus restoring good visibility from Eqypt point to Hurst uninterupted.

Solent Rescue were established in 1971 initially as a beach rescue unit operated by auxiliary coastguards. Solent Rescue has since then developed into a fully operational independent lifeboat station, which operates under the direct control of HM Coastguard and is responsible for approximately 33 square miles of the central and western Solent.
