Independent Solent Lifeboat Organisation
About Solent Rescue
We at Solent Rescue Lifeboat are an independent organisation (i.e. not part of RNLI) with a crew of the highest calibre with excellent levels of camaraderie & motivation. Based at Lepe Country Park, Exbury, Hampshire, we were established in 1971 initially as a beach rescue unit operated by auxiliary coastguards.
Solent Rescue has since then developed into a fully operational lifeboat station, which operates under the direct control of HM Coastguard and is responsible for approximately 33 square miles of the central and western Solent.
The Solent is the busiest recreational waterway in the world and as such, demands dedicated well trained lifeboat crews to assist the many people that find themselves in difficulties within its 160sq miles. With hilltop views from Lepe Country Park, Solent Rescue covers 20% of the area, from the Lepe foreshore to Hurst castle and is the only independent lifeboat in the Western Solent.
SOLENT RESCUE NEEDS YOU!
- We desperately need funds to complete the repairs to our lifeboats. Along with new equipment to further our contribution to the local community and visitors.
- It costs us £10,000 a year to keep this service running which is funded totally by the generosity of the public and local companies.
- New equipment required is
- (a) A-frame for the boat,
- (b) Quad/ATV for shore response and rescue
- (c) Day to day equipment and running costs
- Solent Rescue is made up totally by volunteers from all walks of life and ages.
- We are operational at weekends from March till October, bank holidays and 24hrs during the festival of Cowes week.
- The crew are trained in safety at sea, power boat handling, first aid and all activities required to keep a lifeboat operational and lookout manned.
- In addition to the boat crew, the unit is manned by shore teams who launch and recover the lifeboat as well as maintaining the launching equipment and boathouse facilities.
- We are always looking for volunteers either to join the boat crew, shore crew or fundraisers.
- Knowledge of seamanship is not essential as excellent training is offered. From the day you join the crew, you will be able to help in the operation of the boat & shore operations.
- If you are interested in joining then feel free to drop in at the Solent Rescue Lookout on Saturdays or Sundays (from 10am to 5pm)
